Invercassley cottage is situated in the village of Rosehall,
within the district of Sutherland. It is the most northern
district of Scotland, and with a population of only 6
people per square mile it is one of the least densely
populated areas in Europe.
Sutherland has been described as one of the last great
wildernesses in Europe, and with 3 distinct coasts on
its borders it surely has something for everyone. On the
West coast there are rugged cliffs, rocky inlets and sea
lochs. On the East are award winning beaches, golf courses
and nature reserves. Whilst its central and northern areas
range from wide open plains, to marshlands, and onto stunning
highland scenery of rolling hills, inland lochs and spectacular
views. With good road, rail and air links to the district
it is an ideal holiday location, and a great base for
touring the Scottish Highlands.
Rosehall lies at the heart of Sutherland, just over an
hours scenic drive from Inverness, with both the East
and West coasts easily accessicible.
Rosehall is a small village with a scattered population
of about 200, which despite its size has a wonderful community
spirit with many village activities regularly organized
at the village hall. Within the village there is a hotel
and pub, and village shop (with post office, free cash
machine and off licence). Rosehall has a long history
appearing in early accounts as Rosshall possibly from
the Norse hrossal meaning a horse
field. The literal translation of the name is meadow
of fishing nets, perhaps referring to the wide
flood plains of the rivers. In 1748 William Baille bought
the lands of Achness and Altas and called the estate Rosehall.
Located close to the rivers Oykel and Cassley (which
merge into the Kyle of Sutherland), Rosehall is a mecca
for fishermen looking for both trout and salmon. In addition
there are a great variety of walks and cycle routes to
follow in Rosehall, that take in the rivers, waterfalls,
wooded glens and heather covered hills that surround the
area. During your stay you will certainly encounter the
wealth of wildlife in the area: from roe, sika and red
deer on the hills, hen harrier, buzzards and ospreys in
the air, otters, salmon and dippers in or by the rivers
and a wealth of garden and song birds.
These are just some of the reasons to spend time in the
Rosehall area, so why not stop and discover them for yourselves.
